A Practical Sanskrit Introductory

This is an attempt to make "A Practical Sanskrit Introductory" by Charles Wikner, an excellent and free tutorial / learning material for Sanskrit Language and Devanagari Script, available to those persons who have had trouble viewing and printing the postscript or PDF1 PDF2 files for  it. PDF1 is an improved version for both PC and Mac viewing and printing. (See additional notes below for these formats.) Please note that some of the page gifs are blank pages as in the original postscript file.

This is a gift from Charles for all of us so use it as a launching pad towards learning and teaching Sanskrit. It may be useful to know Charles' dedication in a reply to a friend who wanted to translate the introductory in French. I hope it helps people to take up translation in their own mother tongue. "The Introductory was produced as a service to mankind: so far as I am concerned, it is freely available in the public domain. As such, you are of course free to translate it, and you do not require my permission. Furthermore, I would encourage you to translate it and make it publicly available. Having waived all my personal rights, I am in no position to insist that you make your translation public, but can only encourage you to do so. I trust that that makes my position formally and legally clear. I wish you every success in your endeavours. May the Light continue to shine upon your studies!" His detailed reply can be found here where he gives additional tips on using TeX/LaTeX for processing.

These pages have been created by using Webify. The page gifs have been created at 100 dpi to ensure clarity while viewing. This results in each page gif and navigation comment extending  to 2 pages for printing. However, what is going on the 2nd page is only the blank margin and the navigation comment. You can print the relevant portions of the tutorial by choosing to print just the first print page for each web page (try a print preview to get a better idea). You could also choose to just print the gifs (though they may also extend to two pages). If someone can suggest a way to crop all the gifs from the bottom to avoid this problem, please let us know by mailing  your suggestions to (sanskrit at cheerful dot c om).

One of the easier ways for getting a print version of the tutorial is to use the postscript file and print it by copying it to your postscript printer or by using Ghostview. Even those persons who do not have a postscript printer can print it using the generic 'mswinpr2 ' printer driver for WIndows 95 which comes with GSview. I am assuming there might be something similar for Ghostview on UNIX and Mac.

If you are accessing PDF version for viewing the tutorial using Adobe Acrobat reader, please download the file on your computer and view it separately using the reader. If you open it directly instead of downloading and saving, you may get an internal error, a bug reported on Adobe site.
