This note helps you choose the DLI Downloader version most appropriate for you. ***DLID 0.24 or DLID 0.23? DLID 0.24 is an upgrade for DLID-Lite and DLID-Toy based mainly on feedback from users whereas, DLID 0.23 was a major release and included all 9 versions. DLID 0.24 was released in September 2013. The main difference between DLID 0.24 and DLID 0.23 is that, DLID 0.24 is more fault-tolerant and can cope better with difficult network conditions. If you are having repeated problems getting books with DLID 0.23, you must upgrade to DLID 0.24. Otherwise, you need not. The details given below for DLID 0.23, apply for DLID 0.24 also. *** How many versions? How to choose? * DLI Downloader 0.23 comes in three versions now: Complete, Lite and Toy. * The Complete version was released in April 2011. Lite and Toy were released in July 2011. * The COMPLETE version has all the features-- adaptive network engine with profiling, persistent user preferences, resumption, DLI error diagnostics etc., as you see in the User Manual installed with it. It is available on Windows and Linux. * The LITE version has all the basic features, but doesn't have resumption, user preferences, error tracking and adaptive network engine. Instead, it has configurable Proxy support. It is intended for users who don't need all the features and users with roaming profiles, need for configuring multiple proxies, users uprgrading from Vista to Win 7 and having certain Windows related problems etc. In performance terms, is just as fast as DLID Complete. Only, it is not resilient with the DLI servers go down. Unlike the detailed status messages and error codes of DLID Complete, the "status messages" in this version, are fewer in number and give only basic details. It is available on Windows and Linux and through Wine and Winebottler, on OS X (though you have to set up Wine and Winebottler yourself). * The TOY version is an all-Java reimplementation of DLID. It is meant of OS X users and users on other platforms (so long as Java is enabled). It runs at the same speed as Lite and Complete do in SAFE mode. Also, it can only download whole books. Because it is not as fast, it has a special "stop download" button which lets you safely stop downloads that take too long. You can restart these downloads later. But, the Toy version too is quite serviceable and can download from BOTH the IISc main site and the IUCAA mirror. However, you don't need to choose the site. It automatically prefers IUCAA and if the book is not there, it changes to the IISc site. Only major "status messages" like "Book found", "Downloading" etc., are given. It also doesn't have the catalogs built in. You will have to use the online catalogs at http://tinyurl.com/dlidcat1 and http://tinyurl.com/dlidcat2 . But, DLID Toy will certainly suffice for basic usage. * The User Manual discusses only DLID Complete. The FAQs and Support site discuss all three versions. **More info? Troubleshooting?
