1. priye= oh, dear; praphulla= unfolded; cuuta ankura= mango tree, tender leaves; tiikshNa saayakaH= incisive, one who has such arrows; dvirepha maalaa= honeybees, strands; vilasat= shining forth; dhanuH guNaH= bow's, string; vasanta yoddhaa= vasanta [named,] assailant; surata= in lovemaking; pra sanginaam= fully, engaged ones; manaamsi= hearts; veddhum [or, bhettum]= to afflict, [to cleave]; sam upa aagataH= very, nearly, came.

"Oh, dear, with just unfolded tender leaflets of Mango trees as his incisive arrows, shining strings of honeybees as his bowstring, the assailant named vasanta came very nigh, to afflict the hearts of those that are fully engaged in affairs of lovemaking... [6-1]

 Here the Lovegod is the real assailant and spring, vasanta , also termed as madhuH is the friend of Lovegod. In kumaara sambhavam , 6-10 kAlidAsa speaks through the tongue of Lovegod: sahaayam ekam madhum eva labdhvaa... kuryaam harasyaa api pinaaka paaNeH | dhairya cyutim - ke mama dhanvino anye? 'taking help of spring season alone, I have felled down the self-confidence of shiva , who is the other archer of my sort?' alankaara - ruupaka alankaara; cf. cuuta harSita pikakam, jiivita sadR^isham vasanta maasasya | Sat caraNa caraNa bhagnam, R^itu mangalam iva pashyaami || shaakuntalam - 6-1; Thus, this spring season is the all-time favourite of poets.

vaMSastha vR^itti - is its metrer. And verses 2 to 16 are in upajAti, (indravajra and upendravajra combination) except the sixth, which is  completely in upendravajra metre.

2. priye= oh, dear; vasante= in vasanta, the spring; drumaaH sa puSpaaH= trees are, with, flowers; salilam sa padmam= waters are, with, lotuses; striyaH sa kaamaaH= women, with, concupiscence; pavanaH su gandhiH= breezes, agreeably, fragrant; pradoSaaH sukhaa= eventides, comfortable; divasaaH ca ramyaaH= daytimes, also, pleasant; sarvam caaru taram = everything, pleasing, higher in degree [highly.]

"Oh, dear, vernal trees are full with flowers, waters filled with lotuses, breezes loaded with their fragrances blowing agreeably, thereby both the eventides and daytimes are pleasant with those fragrant breezes, whereby the women are with concupiscence, and thus everything is highly pleasing now. [6-2]

In this alankaara is svabhaavokti .

3. ayam vasantaH= this, spring; vaapii jalaanaam= pools, to waters [say, to water of swimming pools]; maNi mekhalaanaam= to jewel-studded, girdle strings; shashaanka  bhaasaam = to moon's, shine; pramadaa janaanaam= to women of age, folks of; kusuma  anvitaanaaam= flowers, having; cuutaa drumaaNaam= to Mango, trees; dadaati saubhaagyam = endows, prosperity.

"This spring season endows prosperity to waters of swimming pools, for they will be swimmable; to moonshine, for it will be pleasurable; to mango trees, for their one-time flowers are just flowered; more so, to the bejewelled girdle strings of women, for their wearing is neither cumbersome nor irksome in this season; and to women who enjoy wearing such ornaments, thus themselves becoming enjoyable in these days. [6-3]

4. vilaasiniinaam= of flirtatious women; nitamba bimbaani= behinds, roundish; kusumbha raaga aruNitaiH= kusumbha, a red flower used in dyeing, with colour, reddened; dukuulaiH= with silk cloths; stana maNDalaani= bosoms, areas [busts]; kunkuma raaga= crocus [ochry,] with colour; gauraiH= ocherish; rakta= reddish; amshukaiH= with thin silks; alankriyante= adorning.

"These days the flirtatious women are adorning their roundish behinds with silk cloths that are dyed with reddish dye of kusumbha flowers; bosomy busts with thin silks dyed with ocherish and reddish colours, for thinness and silkiness are agreeable in this thinnish ambience. [6-4]

5. pramadaa janaanaam= for women of age, folks of; karNeSu= in ears [at temples]; yogyam= befitting; nava karNikaaram= new, karnikara, a white cup like flower, [Pentapetes acerifolia]; caleSu niileSu alakeSu ashokam= in swaying, blackish, hair-locks, ashoka flowers; nava mallikaayaaH = new, jasmine; phullam puSpam ca= unfolded, flowers, also; prayaanti kaantim= going [flourish,] resplendence [beauty.]

"Womenfolk now decorate their temples with just bloomed whitish flowers of karnikara and with reddish flowers of ashoka; swaying black hair-locks with whitish jasmines; thus unfolded is the beauty of these women aided with the flourishing resplendence of these newly unfolded flowers in these days. [6-5]

6. kam api= something indescribable [resplendence]; Amukta mAnuSham= a little forsaken [is his entity], for human tendency; a+mukta nija anubhAvam= not, forsaken, his own, uniqueness [of a godhead]; arUDha yauvanam= just now booming, youthfulness; a+gUDha vidagdha lIlam= not, obscured, fervency, its ramifications - though a boy, he is fervent to participate in love games in an unobscured manner; AmR^iShTa yauvanam= verging upon, youthfulness; a+naShTa kishora bhAvam= not, lost, boy's, behaviour; Adyam mahaH= primordial, resplendence; me mAnase mAdyati= in my, heart, frolicking.

Some indescribable resplendence is frolikcing in my heart that appears to have forsaken its original entity to certain degree for the sake of its human tendency on earth, yet that which has not forsaken its own uniqueness of godhood for the sake of humanity; though youthfulness is just now booming, his fervency to be fully romantic is unobscured; though youthfulness is verging upon his age, boyishness is still persisting in him; thus, this must be the double-front of primordial resplendence. [6-6]

7. vilaasiniinaam= of flirtatious women; sa patra lekheSu= with, leafage designs [with foliages]; hema ambu ruha= golden, water born [golden lotuses]; upameSu= in simile; vaktreSu = on faces; sveda aagamaH= sweat, arrival; ratna= jewels; antare= among; mauktika = pearls; sanga= joined [interspersed]; ramyaH= delightfulness; vistarataam upaiti= diversification attaining [beautified],.

"Golden lotusy faces of flirtatious women are now tattooed with erasable tattoos using black kasturi lines of foliage, on which pearly sweat-drops are glimmering; with them those faces are delightfully beautified as gem-studded jewellery interspersed with pearls. [6-7]

Here in simile - u.am - hemaamburuha; u.me - vilaasinii mukhaa saadhaaraNa dharmi - unsaid; vaacaka - upama; dharma lupta; sa paksha upamito upoamaaH Secondly, the similitude u.ma - is with the pearls strung in between one gem and the other of jewellery, are like the u.me drops of sweat arising from within the designs of foliages of facial tattoos. saa. dharmi - ramyata; vaacka - iva - unsaid, - mauktika gumbha iva ramyaH - vaacka lupta upama . The sweat effusing is not because of heat of sun but owing to the strain of lovemaking, for which this season will be conducive.

8. adhunaa= now; naaryaH= women; shlatha bandhanaani= loosened, fastenings [of breast cloth, and other undergarments]; kandarpa samaakulaani= by Lovegod, flustered; gaatraaNi= with limbs; ucChvaasa yantyaH= emitting sighs [huffing and puffing, pant for, or after]; samiipa vartiSu priyeSu = nearby, tarrying, in lovers; sam utsukaa eva bhavanti= with, interestedness [enamoured,] they are becoming - becoming responsive to.

"Lovegod flustering their limbs, women are panting and loosening the fastenings of their undergarments; while spring fever made them romantically sultry they are panting after need-fulfilment; thus they are becoming responsive these days to their lovers that are tarrying at their nearby. 6-8]

"The Lovegod is making the limbs of sybaritic women as thinnish, palish and lethargic; tending to yawn time and again; with these syndromes the bodies of women are becoming restless in the spring fever, with an air of enchantment. [6-9]

10. adya= now; anangaH= Lovegod; madira alaseSu striiNaam= by hard drinks, jaded out, in women; netreSu lolaH= in eyes, fluttery; ganDeSu paaNDu= in cheeks, whitely; staneSu kaThinaH = in bosoms, stony; madhyeSu nimnaH= in middle [at waist,] slimly; jaghaneSu piinaH= in behinds, sturdy; bahudhaa sthitaH= diversely, [Love-god] is there [apparent.]

"Now the Lovegod is diversely apparent in women jaded out by hard drinks, for their eyes are fluttery, cheeks whitely, bosoms stony, waists slimly, and behinds sturdy, which features are the evidences of women's seasonal infatuation with Lovegod. [6-10]

11. kaamaH= Lovegod; pramadaa janaanaam= of women, folk; angaani= limbs; nidraa alasa vibhramaaNi [vihvalaani]= with sleepiness, sluggish, dizzy; vaakyaani  kincit  mada [madira] laalasaani = words [speech,] a little, [by hard drinks, or] with sensuality, teeter-tottering; bhruu kshepa jihmaani ca= eyebrows, knit, aslant, also; viikshaNaani= looks; cakaara= [Lovegod] made.

"Advent to spring Lovegod makes the limbs of womenfolk sluggish, minds dizzy with sleepiness, speech a little teeter-tottering with sensualities, looks aslant with the knit and unknit eyebrows, for women seek vehement sensual pleasures. [6-11]

6-12. vilaasiniibhiH= by frolicsome [women]; madaa= by lust; alasaabhiH= [women with] faineance, [dolce far niente= pleasant idleness]; anganaabhiH= by women; gaureSu staneSu= on whitish, bosoms; priyangu= plant that gives fragrant seeds [Nacluea cadamba]; kaaliyaka= yellowish turmeric; kunkuma= saffron; aaktam = kneaded; mR^iga naabhi= male musk deer, from its naval [i.e., extracted from deer = musk] yuktam candanam= joined with, sandal-paste; aalipyate= are bedaubing.

"Frolicsome and lustful women that are with faineance are bedaubing their whitish bosoms with sandal-paste, in which well kneaded are the fragrant seeds of priyangu , yellowish turmeric, saffron and musk, to relieve themselves of spring fever. [6-12]

6-13.  kaama madaa= impassioned; alasa angaH= with weary, limbs; janaH= people; guruuNi vaasaamsi= coarse, clothing; tuurNam vihaaya= quickly, on discarding; tanuuni= thinnish; laakshaa rasa ranjitaani= lac, colour, dyed in; sugandhi  kaala  aguru= fragrant, black, aloe vera; dhuupitaani= fumigated with; dhatte= wearing.

"Impassioned people with wearied limbs are wearing thinnish cloths that are fumigated with fragrant aloe vera resin and dyed in the colour of reddish lac resin, quickly discarding their coarse clothing, for their passion and clothing are weighty.[6-13]

6-26. adhva gaH= way, farer [itinerant]; kusumitaan sahakaara vR^ikshaan= flowered, mango, trees; dR^iSTvaa = on seeing; kaantaa viyoga= ladylove's, by dissociation of; pari  khedita= overly, woebegone; citta vR^ittiH= mind's, activity [frame of mind is woebegone]; netre nimiilayati= eyes, shuts; shokam yaati= woefulness, goes into; kareNa  ghraaNam niruNaddhi= with hand, nose, obstructs; rodati= bewails; uccaiH vi rauti  ca= loudly, verily, shrieks, even.

"On seeing a flowered mango tree, the frame of mind of any itinerant is overly woebegone, for he is dissociated with his ladylove; thus he shuts his eyes unable to behold that ladylike mango tree with her hairdo overlaid with flowers; obstructs his nose, for the fragrance of this ladylike mango tree is akin to that of his ladylove; thus he goes into a state of woefulness, and even he bewails and shrieks loudly... thus pitiless is this season, vasanta , spring, for singletons. [6-26]

6-27. ramyaH [ramyaiH]= being delightful; kusuma maasaH= flowery, month; sa mada madhu karaaNaam= with, lusty, honey, makers [honeybees]; kokilaanaam ca= with Kokila-s, also; naadaiH= with racketing around; kusumita sahakaaraiH= flowered, sweet mangos; karNikaariaH ca= with karnikara flowers, also; su tiikshNaiH iSubhi iva= very, acute, with arrows, as though; maaniniinaam maanasam= self-respectful women's, hearts; manmadha  udvejanaaya= Love-god, ecstasies; tudati= cleaves.

"Delightful is this flowery month with the racketing of lusty honeybees and kokila-s around; with flowered mango trees that fruit sweet mangos; with karniakra flowers; each of which is becoming as though an acute of arrow of Lovegod, that ecstasies and even cleaves the hearts of self-respectful women, who cannot explicitly explain their pangs for love, nor can suffer them, implicitly... [6-27]

6-28. aamrii= belonging to mango trees; manjula manjarii= delightful, cluster of flowers; yasya= whose [this is ellipted later]; vara shara= best, arrow is; yat dhanuH= whose, bow; sat kimshukam= goodly, Kimshuka flower [Palasha, butea frondosa tree's flower]; yasya  jyaa= whose, bowstring is; alii kulam= bee, line; yasya sitam Chatram= whose, white [silvery,] parasol is; kalanka rahitam= blemish, less [immaculate]; sita amshuH= white, beamed one, [namely the moon]; yasya mattebhaH= whose, riding ruttish elephant is; malaya  anilaH= Mt. Malaya's, breezes; yat vandinaH paribhR^itaH = to whom, panegyrists, Kokila-s are; saH= such as He is; ayam= he that; loka jit= world, vanquisher; vi tanuH= without, body bodiless Love-god; vasanta anvitaH= friend, along with [vasanta lexically is friend]; vaH bhadram= to you, safety [serendipity]; vitarii tariitu= generously, lavishes.

"Whose best arrow is the delightful cluster of mango flowers, whose bow is the kimshuka flower, whose bowstring is the beeline, whose silvery parasol is the immaculate silvern moon, whose ruttish elephant for ride is the rutted breeze from Mt. malaya that wafts a rutting scent of sandalwood, whose panegyrists are the singing birds, namely kokila-s; such as he is, let that vanquisher of worlds, that formless Lovegod, pairing up with his friend, namely vasanta , the vernal season, lavish serendipities on you all, generously... [6-28]

This verse, along with some more are said to be interpolated. Even then earlier commentators have commented and explained them, hence all are included in here. Some pundits hold objection for the usage of word vitariita riitu and they say that this is a misnomer in construing tR^ii - plavana taraNayoH - loT prathamapurushaika vacana ruupa ; and it is said vitaatartu is agreeable, but it won't fit into this shaarduula vikriiDita metre; Hence, they suggest that ati sarii sR^ijatu may make a good replacement, as used in kumaara sambhavam - 4-32 - vidhuraam jvalanaati sarjanaannanu maam praapaya patyurantikam... Hence, pundits may look into this and advise students about its properness, or about a proper word.

Thus, this is the portrayal of vasanta, spring season, the sixth and concluding chapter in Ritu samhaaram of kavi kAlidAsa.
