Note : yama is a technical term of YogashAstra; ahimsa = non-violence, satyam= speaking truth, asteyam = non-stealing, brahmacharyam = celibacy, and aparigrahah = non-acceptance of offerings; these are called yamas in the YogashAstra; saMyama means self control. (6) ## lokAbhirakShaNaparAmabhayAtmikAM yo mudrAM cha daNDamubhayoH karayorvibibhrat | shAntaH parAtmani rato vilasatyajasraM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 7 || loko.n kI sabhI bhItiyo.n se rakShA karanevAlI abhayamudrA aura daNDa, yaha dono.n jisake hAtha me.n visheSharUpa se dhArita hai.n, jo shAnta hai.n tathA parAtmA prabhu me.n rata hokara nirantara vilasita ho rahe hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatIrUpa guru kI sharaNa me.n mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 7|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who remains established forever in the supreme Reality, who is peaceful, who rises one hand in protection of all mankind, and holds the monk's staff in the other. Note : The AchArya was consistently very particular in holding the staff as ordained in the shAstras. (7) ## rudrAkShahAranichayo.asti gale pavitre bhasmApi phAlaphalake tulasI cha shIrShe | dArvAtmakodakaghaTashcha kare hi yasya shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 8 || jinake gale me.n rudrAkSha\-mAlAo.n kA samUha aneka hAro.n ke rUpa me.n shobhA pA rahA hai, jinake unnata lalATa para bhasma eva.n shira para tulasI sushobhita ho rahI hai, kAShThamaya \ldq{}ghaTa\rdq{} kamaNDalu ke rUpa me.n jinake hAtha me.n hai, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatIrUpa guru kI sharaNa me.n mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 8|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, on whose neck are rows of sacred rudrAkSha necklaces, on whose forehead is the auspicious ash, on whose head is tulasI and in whose hand is a water-pot made of wood. Note : The AchArya introduced wooden utensils for his personal use. Also, he is used to wear huge number of garlands of tulasi, bilva and lemons on his head in his own characteristic way. (8) ## prAptAbhayo janabhayAdiva saMvR^itA~NgaH koShThe kvachitprakaTitArdhasharIrakAntiH | dhyAne rato hitatame satataM ya Aste shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 9 || jo abhayapada ko prApta karane ke bAda bhI janasamparkarUpA bhIti (janabhaya) ke kAraNa apane sharIra ke a.ngo.n ko AvR^itta kara, kisI prakoShTha ke eka kone me.n Adhe sharIra ko hI loka ko darshana dene ke vyAja se prakaTa kiye hue, parabrahma ke sarvottama dhyAnarUpa samAdhi me.n satata lIna rahate hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatIrUpa guru kI sharaNa me.n mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 9|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Chandrashekharendrasarasvati who remains always in meditation on the supreme Reality sitting in the corner of a room constraining his body and revealing only a part of it through some window or the other as though out of fear from people, though he has attained the state of fearlessness. Note : During the AchArya's stay at shivAsthAnam his near invisible posture became wellknown to his devotees. (9) ## annAdikoshamiha yaH pravilApya sUkShme sarvAntare sthirapado dahare susUkShme | advaitamekamavalambya lasantamIDyaM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 10 || jo annamayAdi kosho.n ko kramika rUpa se sarvAntara, vikriyArahita daharAkAshasvarUpa paramAtmA me.n pravilApita kara kevala eka advaita kA avalambana kara sushobhita ho rahe hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatIrUpa guru kI sharaNa me.n mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N | annamaya, prANamaya, manomaya, vij~nAnamaya eva.n Anandamaya pA.Ncha kosha taittirIyopaniShad me.n varNita hai.n, jo AtmA kA kosha kI taraha AchChAdana kie hue hai.n | yaha AchChAdana tAdAtmyAdhyAsa ke dvArA deha, prANa, mana, vij~nAna eva.n Ananda Adi me.n Atmabuddhi kA honA hai | isa adhyAsa ke nirAsa ke pashchAt AtmA brahmarUpa me.n pratiShThita hotA hai, isI tathya kA varNana prakR^ita shloka me.n sa.nketarUpa me.n kiyA gayA hai || 10|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI the revered one, who having dissolved the gross bodies such as annamayakosha etc., into the subtle one and having fixed himself steadily in the most subtle ether called `dahara' shines forth embracing the one reality without a second. Note : In the Taittiriyopanisad five sheaths namely, annamaya, prANamaya, manomaya, vijnAnamaya and Anandamaya are described in detail. It is also described that every succeeding sheath is internal and subtle with regard to the previous sheath. Dahara is the cavity in the heart. Meditation of it as Brahman is enjoined in the Upanisads. (10) ## ekaM dvitIyarahitaM paramArthasatyaM sthUlAdisarvajagataH pravilApasiddham | dR^iShTvA hi yaH smitamukho.astyatilokadR^iShTiH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 11 || eka, dvitIyarahita paramArthasatya (jo sarvadA satya hai) svarUpa brahma, jo sthUla Adi sampUrNa jagat ke pravilApana se siddha hotA hai, usakA j~nAna prApta kara jo sarvadA smitahAsa (tho.DA hAsa) yukta tathA alaukika dR^iShTivAle hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatIrUpa guru kI sharaNa me.n mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N | kAraNalaya ke krama se arthAt pR^ithvI kA jala me.n, jala kA teja me.n, teja kA vAyu me.n, vAyu kA AkAsha me.n, AkAsha kA avyakta me.n aura avyakta kA AtmA me.n laya ke krama se pa~nchabhUto.n kA laya hotA hai | isI ko sthUlAdi jagat kA pravilApana kahA gayA hai | yogashAstra me.n yaha laya kA krama varNita hai || 11|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Chandrashekharendrasarasvati, whose uncommon looks and smile reveal his inward experience of the ultimate reality that is one without a second, that is transcendentally real and attained dissolving the gross world into it. (11) ## yasyaiva vAmanasharIradhR^ito guNAbdhe\- straivikramo hi mahimA vishadIkaroti | brAhmasya dIptatapaso mahimAtirekaM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 12 || brahmaj~nAnasampanna yati sarvarUpa hote hai.n | ata: AchAryacharaNa ke laghukAya ko viShNu kA vAmanarUpa batalAyA gayA hai, jisame.n sthita guNo.n kA vistAra hame.n trivikrama (tIna pAdavikShepo.n se tIno.n loko.n ko mApanevAle viShNu) kI Chavi me.n milatA hai | ata eva yaha varNita kiyA gayA hai ki guNo.n ke sAgara jina svAmipAda ke vAmana (laghukAya) sharIra me.n avasthita mahimA kA vistAra trivikramasvarUpa karatA hai, arthAt AchAryacharaNa me.n jitane guNa hai.n, jo sAmarthya unake antaHkaraNa me.n avasthita hai, usakI sphuTa vyakti ke lie trivikrama kA sharIra hI paryApta ho sakatA hai, anya sharIra nahI.n | aise brAhma tapa ke mahimApu.nja ke rUpa me.n vartamAna shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatIrUpa guru kI sharaNa me.n mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 12|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, the ocean of good and auspicious qualities, who possesses a small and short figure, but whose greatness which fills all the three regions, establishes the glory of severe penance made on Brahman. Note : The terms `vAmana' and `trivikrama' signify two forms of one and the same Vishnu in his fifth incarnation. The first one is short and the second one is so vast that it filled all the three worlds. These terms are used to describe the physical form and the glory of the AchArya respectively. (12) ## o~NkAratattvamanishaM hR^idi bhAvayan yaH prANAnnirudhya hR^idi susthirakAyadR^iShTiH | nirvAtadIpa iva bhAti sudIptamUrtiH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 13 || jo o~NkArasvarUpa tattva kI apane hR^idaya me.n nirantara bhAvanA karate rahate hai.n aura prANa kA hR^idaya me.n nirodha karake apane kAya (sharIra) eva.n dR^iShTi dono.n ko sthira kara dene ke kAraNa vAyurahita sthAna me.n avasthita dIpa kI taraha shobhita hote hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatIrUpa guru kI sharaNa me.n mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 13|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who shines steadily poised like the flame of a lamp that is undisturbed in the absence of wind, and whose form is thus effulgent on account of his stopping the breath through prANAyAma and attaining steadiness in body and looks, and who remains in contemplation upon the supreme reality which is revealed in the letter `OM' in his mind. (23) ## kAryaM sadaiva nigamAgamapoShaNAdi dhAryaM subilvatulasIdalamAlikAdi | hAryaM cha bhaktajanatAduritaM cha yasya shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 24 || sarvadA nigama, Agama kA poShaNa hI jinake lie kArya hai; bilvapatra, tulasIdala eva.n mAlA hI jinake lie dhArya (dhAraNa karane ke yogya) hai; bhaktajanasamUha kA durita (pApa) hI jinake lie hArya (haraNa karane ke yogya) hai, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 24|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, for whom activity is always directed towards the furtherance of Vedic and shAstraic studies, for whom the garlands to be worn are of the holy leaves of bilva and tulasi and for whom the thing to be destroyed is the sin of his disciples. Note : tirtha means places of holy water. Cf. ##bhavadvidhAH bhAgavatAH tIrthabhUtAH mahItale tIrthIkurvanti tIrthAni svAntasthena gadAbhR^itA |## (25) ## pANDityameduramatIn svasabhAsthalIShu sambodhayan vishadayannigamArthatattvam | naijaM prakAshayati yo gurumUrtirUpaM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 26 || pANDitya se otaprota mativAle vidvadgaNa ko apanI sabhAsthalI me.n sambodhita karate hue nigama ke pratipAdya tattva ko vistAra se bodhita karake jo apane gurumUrti rUpa ko spaShTarUpa se prakAshita karate rahe hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 26|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Chandrashekharendrasarasvati, who reveals his true form of DakShiNAmUrti, the form of Shiva as wisdom incarnate, by such acts as convening eminent scholars for discussion and addressing them and by elucidating the true significance of the meaning of the Vedas and the shAstras to them. Note : It is in the good experience of Pandits that quite often they were unable to answer the questions posed by the AchArya during shAstraic conventions. At the end he used to clarify them himself. (26) ## shrIshA~NkaraM shivatamaM matamAtmabheda- dhikkAradhIramamR^itaM nigamAntasiddham | advaitamatra gadituM hi kR^itAvatAraM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 27 || advaita brahma kA pratipAdana karanevAlA shrIsha~NkarabhagavatpAda kA atyanta kalyANakArI mata, jo Atmabheda kI dhikkR^iti buddhi ko dhAraNa karatA hai, jo kisI bhI mata se khaNDita na hone ke kAraNa amR^itasvarUpa hai tathA upaniShad se siddha hotA hai, usakA upadesha karane ke lie hI jinhoMne avatAra liyA hai, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 27|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who has manifested himself in this world to teach us the Advaita (i) which was propounded by ShrI Shankara, (ii) which is the most auspicious of all philosophies, (iii) which alone is competent refuting the difference between the jIvAtman and the paramAtman, (iv) which is as sweet as nectar and (v) which is established by the Upanisads. (27) ## kAmAkShidivyacharaNe satataM hyupAste kAmAMshcha bhaktajanatAbhimatAn dadAti | yaH kAmakoTimaThapo.api nirastakAmaH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 28 || jo parAmbA bhagavatI kAmAkShI ke divya charaNo.n kI satata upasanA karate hai.n tathA bhaktajanasamUha kI abhimata kAmanAo.n kI pUrti karate hai.n, jo kAmakoTi\-maTha ke maThAdhipati hokara bhI kAmanAo.n kA nirAsa kara chuke hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 28|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Chandrashekharendrasarasvati, who always worships and meditates upon the divine feet of Kamaksi, who fulfills all the desires (kamas) of his devotees, who heads the KAma KoTi PItha and who yet remains without any desire. (28) ## advaitameva vachane charaNe svachitte sandeshashaMsanavidhau hitabodhane cha | advaitamUrtiriha yo vilasatyajasraM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 29 || jinakI vANI se sarvadA advaita kA prakAshana hotA hai, jinakA chitta sarvadA bhagavAn ke charaNo.n me.n, shiShyo.n ko divya sandesha dene me.n tathA unake hitabodhana me.n rahatA hai, aise advaitamUrti ke rUpa me.n jo sarvadA shobhA pA rahe hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 29|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who possesses unique uniformity of thought, word and action, and who gives messages of good counsel prompted by his own convictions and practice in a unique way. Indeed, he exists forever as Advaita personified. (29) ## yatpAdasevanamalabhyapadAptihetu\- ryaddarshanaM sakaladarshanasiddhihetuH | yadbhAvanaM shubhadamIpsitalAbhahetuH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 30 || jinake charaNo.n kA sevana alabhyapada kI prApti kA hetu hai, jinakA darshana sakala siddhiyo.n kA hetu hai, jinakI mUrti kA nirantara dhyAna (bhAvanA) shubha ko denevAlA tathA Ipsita lAbha kA hetu hai, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 30|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, serving whose feet endows one with the most unattainable and coveted positions, seeing whom is to see all that is to be seen, contemplating upon whom gives one all auspiciousness and enables one to attain all that is desired. (30) ## AchAryashekharamameyatapaHprabhAva\- mAnandakandalitachArugabhIravaktram | shiShyAbhayaikavaradAnarataM mahAntaM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 31 || AchArya shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI me.n aprameya (anumAna ke ayogya) tapa kA prabhAva lakShita hotA hai, Ananda kI vR^iShTi karanevAlA jinakA mukhamaNDala shobhAyukta eva.n gAmbhIryayukta hai, jo shiShyo.n ko abhaya kA varadAna karane me.n sarvadA udyata rahate hai.n, jo sarvaprakAra se mahattvayukta hone ke kAraNa mahAn hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 31|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who is the AchArya par excellence, who possesses the power of tapas in abundance, whose face is both majestic and beautiful with bliss permeating through every pore, who is indulgent in offering the boon of fearlessness to his disciples, and who is great in every way. (31) ## AvR^ittachakShuriha yassakalaM prapa~nchaM svapnAtmakaM parimR^ishan kurute cha kAryam | sAkShIbhavan svakaraNAdisucheShTitasya shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 32 || jo netra\-nimIlana kara sampUrNa prapa~ncha kI svapnasadR^ishatA kA vichAra karate hue anAsakta bhAva se kArya karate rahate hai.n tathA apane karaNa eva.n akaraNa rUpa indriyo.n se anuShThita kArya ke sAkShIrUpa me.n vidyamAna hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 32|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who having turned his eyes inward, experiences the entire world as a dream and who yet performs all his actions, distancing himself as the witness of his own good deeds performed by his physical and mental faculties. (32) ## yo hykarUpanijajIvitadarshanena sampUjito.asti sakalaiH svajanaiH paraishcha | vAgyAmakashshamadamAdiguNasvarUpaH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 33 || jinakI eka rUpa me.n jIvanacharyA ko AjIvana dekhakara sabhI shiShyagaNa, AtmIya jana eva.n anya loga bhI unakI kevala shraddhA se nahI.n, guNaprayojya pUjA karate hai.n, jo vANI kA niyantraNa kara maunavrata dhAraNa karanevAle tathA shama\-damAdi guNo.n ke mUrtarUpa hI hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 33|| ## I take refuge in me preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who is manifest as the personification of qualities like sama and dama, who has been adored by all his disciples as well as by others, and who maintains silence; and who has thus silenced his critics, by exhibiting his uniform and consistent life-style. Note : Control of the internal organ (mind) is called shama and control of the external organs such as eye etc. is called dama. (33) ## yasyaiva jIvanamihAsti shatAbdasAkShi dharmaprachAraparipAlanabaddhadIkSham | AdhyAtmikasvaparirakShaNadakShadakShaM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 34 || jinakA jIvana sau varSha kA sAkShI hai, jo dharmaprachAra eva.n dharma ke paripAlana hetu guru se dIkShA prApta kiye hue hai.n, jo AdhyAtmika dR^iShTi se svaparirakShaNa me.n dakSha logo.n se bhI adhika dakSha hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 34|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, whose life is totally committed to the protection and propagation of sanAtana dharma, whose life most competently protects our spiritual wealth and whose life stands as witness to the full span of the twentieth century. (34) ## saMsAratApaparitaptajanAliduHkhaM hartuM svayaM parijahAra bhavAkhyabandham | kAruNyapUraparishItalasaumyadR^iShTiH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 35 || sa.nsAra\-tApa se paritapta janasamUha ke duHkha kA haraNa karane hetu jinho.nne sa.nsAra\-bandhana kA svaya.n tyAga kiyA hai, karuNA ke pravAha se jinakI dR^iShTi sarvatobhAvena shItala tathA saumya hai, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 35|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who has cut asunder the knot of samsAra, for the sake of relieving the people who have been afflicted by the disease of samsAra and whose looks are warm and friendly with compassion overflowing them. (35) ## ADhye dhanena rahite viduShAM variShThe.a\- vidvajjane yuvajane.ativayaskadehe | saMskAramAtramupalakShya karoti chittaM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 36 || dhanI vyakti ko yA dhanarahita daridra ko, shreShTha vidvAn ko yA avidvAn pAmara puruSha ko, yuvaka ko yA atyadhika vaya vAle vyakti ko upalakShita kara unakI chittavR^itti kevala sa.nskAra ke lie aghavidhUnana hetu hotI thI | aisI samadR^iShTi vAle karuNAparAyaNa shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 36|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who cares equally for the wealthy and the poor, the scholar and the illiterate, the young and the old, whatever one may be, only if he is of good conduct. (36) ## sarvaM cha bhaktagaditaM kaTuduHkhajAtaM shR^iNvan sadA parimR^ishan tadapAyahetum | mArgaM dishan yativaro.api mahAkuTumbaH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 37 || bhakto.n ke dvArA vyakta kie gaye kaTu duHkhasamUha ko sunakara usa para vichAra karate hue usako dUra karane kA upAya batalAnevAle yativara kA kuTumba bahuta vishAla thA | isa vishAla kuTumba para anugraha\-dR^iShTi rakhanevAle shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 37|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Chandrashekharendrasarasvati, who listens to the woes of his disciples, who contemplates on remedies to relieve them of their sorrows and who instructs the disciples accordingly and is indeed, therefore, the head of a large family though he remains a sannyAsin himself. (37) ## deshaM bhraman dhanachayaM parigR^ihya yachChan santoShayan janatatiM svapiteva putrAn | yo rAjate yativaro vasudhAkuTumbaH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 38 || sampUrNa rAShTra kA bhramaNa karate hue prabhUta dhana kA sa.ngraha kara usake vitaraNa ke dvArA janasAmAnya ko apane svaya.n kI taraha putro.n ko santoSha dene vAle, kevala rAShTra ke bhale ke liye apane kuTumba kI taraha sneha evaM apanatva dene vAle shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 38|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Chandrashekharendrasarasvati, who being a mendicant, considers the world for his family, because of his constant travel and access to funds, collecting and then giving away for the welfare of all as father does his children. (38) ## mukto.api san bhuvanasa~NgrahahetunA yaH karmANi sarvajanatAhitadAnyasaktaH | kurvannidarshayati naijajagadgurutvaM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 39 || jIvanmukta hone para bhI jo lokasthiti ke nimitta karma ke sa.ngraha ke lie sarvajanasamUha kA hita karanevAle karmo.n kA AcharaNa asakta hokara bhI svaya.n karate hue apane jagadgurutva ko pradarshita karate hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 39|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Chandrashekharendrasarasvati, who being liberated himself, performs, in a detached manner, actions that are good to all people, with a view to teach the world the truth about dispassionate action and who thereby justifies his status as jagadguru or the teacher of the world. (39) ## pUrNaM vayastadupadeshavidhishcha pUrNaH pUrNaM tapastadupadiShTaparAtmabodhaH | pUrNaM cha karma ya ihAsti nitAntapUrNaH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 40 || jinhe.n sau varSha kI pUrNa vaya prApta huI hai, jinakI upadesha\-vidhi bhI pUrNa hai; kyo.nki unake dvArA upadiShTa mArga kA anusaraNa kara loga aihalaukika eva.n pAralaukika phalo.n ko prApta kara Anandita hote hai.n | unakA tapa pUrNa hai tathA unake dvArA upadiShTa parAtmA kA bodha bhI pUrNa hai, jinake karma pUrNa hai.n aura isa prakAra sarvavidha pUrNatA ke kAraNa jo nitAnta pUrNatA ko prApta hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 40|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, whose life of a hundred years is complete, whose counselling is complete, whose penance is complete, whose exposition of the supreme being (paramAtman) is complete, whose actions are complete and who is himself in every way complete. (41) ## lokasya yo hitakaro.asti sukarmayogI sthANau kR^itAtmasharaNo nanu bhaktiyogI | sAkShAtkR^itAtmavibhavaH khalu bodhayogI shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 42 || jo sampUrNa loka kA hita karanevAle shobhana karmayogI hai.n, jinho.nne bhagavAn sha~Nkara me.n prapatti kara bhaktiyoga kA AshrayaNa kiyA hai, jo AtmA ke vaibhava kA sAkShAtkAra karane ke kAraNa j~nAnayogI hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N | shrImadbhagavadgItA me.n j~nAnayoga, karmayoga aura bhaktiyoga ke rUpa me.n Ishvara se yoga yA milana hetu tIna upAya batalAye gaye hai.n | una tIno.n upAyo.n kA samAvesha AchAryacharaNa me.n batAyA gayA hai || 42|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who is considered an exemplar of Karmayoga because of the actions he performs for the good of the society, who is considered an exemplar of bhaktiyoga because of his surrender to Lord Shiva and who is considered an exemplar of jnAnayoga because of his direct perception and experience of the atman. Note : These three yogas which are considered to be mutually complimentary are well described in the texts like the BhagavadgitA. The AchArya is described as an exemplar of all the three yogas. Note : The AchArya wore exclusively KhAdi clothes till he attained siddhi. (53) ## varNeShvavAntaravibhAgashateShu satsu vaivAhikAdisamayaM dishati svake yaH | sa~Nghasya sarvagaNavR^iddhimapekShamANaH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 54 || brAhmaNa\-kShatriya\-vaishya\-shUdrAdi varNo.n me.n eka\-eka me.n avAntara shatAdhika bhedo.n ke rahane para bhI vivAhAdi apane samUha me.n kiye jA.Nya, aisA nirdesha upadesha ke mAdhyama se dete hue jo sabhI samUho.n eva.n avAntara prabhedo.n kI vR^iddhi kI apekShA rakhate hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 54|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who advocates alliances of marriages within one's own community in a society where several hundreds of communities exist, only with a view to protect each and every group within the larger whole of the society. (54) ## varNAshramAdiparirakShaNadIkShito yaH kAruNyadR^iShTikaraNe na vivekti ka~nchit | lokasya dR^iShTimanusR^itya nijAM cha dR^iShTiM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 55 || varNAshrama Adi kI sarvathA rakShA karane hetu kR^itasa~Nkalpa hone para bhI, kR^ipApUrvaka karuNA kI dR^iShTi karate samaya kisI ko ve bheda se alaga nahI.n karate, chAhe varNAshramAvalambI ho yA anya dharmI, Arta hone para saba para kR^ipA karate hai.n | loka kI dR^iShTi kA anusaraNa kara ve vyavahAra\-nirvAha ke lie varNAshrama Adi kI rakShA kA upadesha dete hai.n; kintu unakI apanI dR^iShTi se jagat ke mithyA hone se ve bhedarahita hokara sabako bhayamukta karane hetu karuNA karate hai.n | aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 55|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Candrashekharendrasarasvati, who in spite of being committed to the protection of varNas and Ashramas, never shows any disparity in his compassion to any one and who thus reconciles his individual point of view and the social point of view in an amicable way. Note : From the point of view of AchArya, who is liberated while living, varNas and Ashramas are irrelevant. But from the point of view of the world they are very much relevant to uphold shAstraic instructions and to maintain the equilibrium. The AchArya's point of view is pAramArthika whereas the point of view of the world is vyAvahArika. He has reconciled both these seemingly opposite views in his own unique way. (55) ## devAlayeShu satataM suma\-dhUpa\-dIpa\- naivedyanirmitikR^ite cha didesha dAtum | shAlIshcha rUpyakachayaM vibhavAnusAraM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 56 || mandiro.n me.n puShpa, dhUpa, dIpa, naivedya Adi pUjAsambhAra kI AvashyakatA kI pUrti karane ke lie jinho.nne logo.n ko apanI sAmarthya ke anusAra chAvala aura rUpayA dene hetu upadesha diyA, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 56|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Chandrashekharendrasarasvati, who has called for the donation of rice and money according to one's capacity for the offering of flowers, dhUpa and naivedya in the temples. (56) ## kA~nchIpure mahati yo vicharan svakIya\- vAsAdinA prakaTayan sthalagauravAdi | jIrNAn hi devanilayAn supupoSha nityaM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 57 || vishAla kA~nchIpurI me.n vicharaNa karate hue jo apane nivAsa Adi ke dvArA vishrAmasthala ke gaurava, mahattva Adi ko sUchita karate hai.n tathA jIrNa devanilayo.n kA jIrNoddhAra Adi ke dvArA nitya poShaNa karate hai.n; aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 57|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who has helped the renovation of the dilapidated temples in KAnchIpuram by such methods as wandering in the city, and by himself staying in them for some time to highlight the greatness and auspiciousness of these temples. Note : During the AchArya's memorable stay at SivasthAnam, it was in the experience of the visiting devotees to enquire about the place of his stay and to search for and locate it with great difficulty. (57) ## sarvArthasiddhidamatho manasi prasAda\- sandhAyakaM shrutilayAdiyutaM cha viShNoH | sa~NkIrtanaM kaliharaM dishatIha sarvAn shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 58 || sabhI prayojano.n ko siddha karanevAle tathA mana me.n prasannatA kA sa~nchAra karanevAle, shruti\-laya Adi se yukta bhagavAn viShNu ke kaliyuga ke doSho.n ko dUra karanevAle, nAmasa.nkIrtana kA upadesha sabhI ko denevAle shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 58|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who advises all to perform the musical rendering of the names of Vishnu-VishnusankIrtana - which gives all things desired, which gives solace to the mind, which is suited to shruti and laya and which is the destroyer of ``kali''. (60) ## hastadvayena hR^idaye nihitena bimbaM vyAsasya pUjanakR^ite praNayan babhau yaH | advaitagA~NgajalanetR^ibhagIrathAbhaH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 61 || vyAsa\-pUjana ke avasara para, apane dono.n hAtho.n se vyAsadeva kI pratimA ko apane hR^idaya me.n sameTa kara le jAte samaya jo advaitarUpI ga~NgA kA jala lAnevAle bhagIratha kI taraha pratIta hote hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N | visheSha\- vyAsa jI ne brahmasUtra kI rachanA kara advaita\-ga~NgA kA udbhava kiyA; kintu dharatI para usake prachAra eva.n sarvatra gamana kA kArya bhagIratha\-sadR^isha AchArya sha~Nkara eva.n unake anuyAyiyo.n ne kiyA | yahI tathya yahA.N sa~Nketita hai || 61|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who is hailed as Bhagiratha bringing down to us the Advaita GangA, while holding the idol of VyAsa against his chest and taking it to the place of worship during VyAsa-pUjA. (61) ## yaH svAminAthabhagavAn praNavaM svapitre sarvAtmakAya jagatAM gurave didesha | tasyaiva rUpamaparaM manute jano yaM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 62 || jinho.nne svAmInAtha bhagavAn ke rUpa me.n avatIrNa hokara apane pitA eva.n jagat ke guru bhagavAn shiva ko praNavopAsanA kA rahasya batalAyA, aise svAminAtha kA hI dUsarA rUpa jisako loga mAnate hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 62|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Chandrashekharendrasarasvati, whom people consider to be a manifestation of Lord SvaminAtha who initiated his father Lord Siva, the teacher of all the worlds, into the meaning of the mystic praNavopAsana. Note: It may be noted that the name of the AchArya before he was initiated into the sannyAsa was SvAminAthan. (62) ## padbhyAM charan bharatabhUmimanekavAraM sampAdya shiShyadhanamadbhutasa~NkhyayA yaH | sambhAvyameva sakalaM jagatIti shAsti shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 63 || isa bhAratavarSha kI bhUmi me.n aneka bAra paidala bhramaNa kara, adbhuta sa.nkhyA me.n shiShyo.n ko dIkShita kara asambhava ko sambhava karanevAle jo AchArya\-charaNa jagatItala para saba kuCha sambhava hI hai, asambhava kuCha nahI.n hai, aisA upadesha dete hai.n; una shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 63|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Chandrashekharendrasarasvati, who has shown that nothing is impossible in this world by his walking across the length and breadth of this vast land on foot several times, and thus earning an abundant wealth of devotees all over the country. (63) ## vedoktadharmacharaNe pratiShiddhahAnau vidyAsu cha shrutishiraHpratipAditAsu | brahmAparokShakaraNe sunidarshanaM yaH shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 64 || veda\-pratipAdita dharma kA AcharaNa karane me.n, veda se niShiddha kA tyAga karane me.n, upaniShad me.n pratipAdita vidyAo.n (upAsanAo.n) kA bhramarahita nishchayAtmaka j~nAna rakhane me.n tathA brahma kA aparokSha sAkShAtkAra karane me.n jo shobhana nidarshana (dR^iShTAnta) hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 64|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who is exemplary in conducting the rituals enjoined in the Vedas, in abandoning the actions condemned in the Vedas, in undertaking the upAsanAs prescribed in the Upanishads and in attaining the realisation of Brahman. (64) ## yasyaiva dIptavapuShaH paramAtmadR^iShTe\- rmuktAtmano vigalitAkhilabandhanasya | agre sthito hi manute svamatIvadhanyaM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 65 || tapa ke kAraNa dIpta vapuvAle, sarvatra paramAtma\-dR^iShTi rakhanevAle, sampUrNa bandhano.n kA vigalana hone se jIvanmuktAvasthA me.n virAjamAna jisa yatirAja ke sammukha sthita vyakti apane ko atyanta dhanya mAnate hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 65|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, who possesses a glowing physical structure, whose vision is fixed in ParamAtman, who is liberated, whose bondages of various kinds have been destroyed and standing in whose presence one feels himself as being blessed plentifully. (65) ## yasyaiva pUrNa\-paripUta\-parAtmabodha\- dIptasya cheha sahajanma\-sahAdhivAsaiH | dhanyA chakAsti janatA bhuvi bhAratIyA shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 66 || jo pUrNa pavitra paratattva ke sAkShAtkAra se pradIpta hai.n, jisake kAraNa unake sAtha bhAratabhUmi me.n janma lenevAlA tathA sAtha\-sAtha nivAsa karanevAlA janasamUha apane ko dhanya mAnatA hai tathA jo bhAsamAna apane svarUpa me.n virAjamAna hai.n, aise shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 66|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri Chandrashekharendrasarasvati, whose realisation of the complete and auspicious ParamAtman has rendered him radiant, by whose contemporaneity in birth and life the humanity in India is blessed. (66) ## \ldq{}yo.antaH pravishya mama vAchamimAM prasuptAM sa~njIvayatyakhilashaktidharaH svadhAmnA\rdq{} | hR^idye supadyarachane parichodayaMstaM shrIchandrashekharaguruM sharaNaM prapadye || 67 || jo sampUrNa shaktisampanna paramAtmA sharIra ke bhItara pravesha kara apanI shakti ke dvArA merI gA.Dha\-nidrA me.n nimagna vANI ko sa~njIvita karane ke dvArA sundara padya\-rachanA me.n pravR^itta kara rahA hai, usa paramAtmA ke svarUpa me.n vidyamAna shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI gurupAda kI sharaNa me.n anya sAdhano.n kA tiraskAra kara mai.n prapattipUrvaka gamana karatA hU.N || 67|| ## I take refuge in the preceptor Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, the all-powerful, who having entered me in spirit has kindled my dormant capacity for verbal expression and has caused by his might the composition of these good poems. Note : The first half of this verse forms the words of Dhruva in the Srimadbhagavata. (67) ## yaddivyapAdakamale navapadyapuShpaiH sampUjite shivatame shubhade sharaNye | shrIchandrashekharayatIndrasarasvatI vo mahyaM sadaiva varado.astu gururgariShThaH || 68 || nava padya\-puShpo.n se supUjita jinake divya pAdapadmayugala kalyANasvarUpa, shubha denevAle tathA sharaNAgata kI rakShA karanevAle hai.n, aise pAdapadmavAle yativara shrI chandrashekharendra sarasvatI jI mahArAja, jo atishaya garimAmaya guru hai.n, vaha Apa sabake lie aura mere lie bhI abhIShTa kI prApti karAnevAle ho.n | arthAt hama sabako AchAryacharaNa se abhIShTa kI prApti ho || 68|| ## May Shri ChandrashekharendrasarasvatI, the greatest of all the preceptors, whose lotus feet are auspicious, the giver of all good things and the sole refuge and which are worshipped with the flowers of these new verses, grant to you and me all that is desired.
