Mundaka Upanishad

§1

Knowledge is twofold, higher and lower.  Lower knowledge includes study of the Vedas, linguistics, rituals, astronomy and all the arts.  Higher knowledge leads to Self-realisation.

The lower knowledge is of no use in “the sea of samsara”.  The pure in heart who practice meditation will attain the immortal Self.  Seek a teacher who has realised the Self; he will reveal Brahman.

§2

It [Brahman/ the Self] is in the cave [of the heart].  You achieve it through meditation.

§3

Two birds [ego and Self] nestle on a tree.  One eats a fig [ie takes part in the pleasures of life]; the other looks on [ie is detached].

Note: This Upanishad is very difficult to summarise.  It's so allusive and so full of imagery.
