KILLING OF COW AND BEEF EATING IN INDIAN MYTHOLOGY
One website refers to some sacred vedic texts where there is context of beef eating. An attempt will be made here to give a detailed account of the contexts where beef eating has been mentioned and also the hidden esoteric aspect of this.
Aitareya Brahmana 1.15 refers to killing of an ox or barren cow on the occasion of arrival of a king or somebody. Paanini, in one of his aforisms, refers to a guest as a killer of cow. This has been widely interpreted that cow used to be killed on the occasion of arrival of a guest.
Shatapatha Brahmana 3.1.2.21 mentions that a person who is under pledge for yagna should not eat cow or ox because gods have kept the essences of all the animals in them. But at the same time, sage Yaajnavalkya has been quoted as saying that if it is 'ansal;, then he will eat.
Shatapatha Brahmana 4.5.2.1 describes the killing and elevation to a higher plane of a barren cow.
Taittireeya Samhita 7.1.1.5 refers to the birth of Jagati Chhanda, a businessman/Vaishya, a cow in animals from the stomach of Prajaapati, so these have been classified as worthy to be eaten.
Atharvaveda 12.4.37 and 38 decries the preparation of barren cow except for the sake of gods. There is reference of killing of cows in Magha in Atharvaveda 14.1.13. Rigveda 10.85.13 directs killing of cows in Aghaa/sin. Atharvaveda 5.18.1, 5.19.4, 5.19.10 etc. refer the cow of a brahmin as forbidden food and decry its eating.
Taittireeya Brahmana 3.4.16.1 directs killing of cow for Nirriti/the god of sins and also dircts cutting of cow for hunger. Taittireeya Brahmana 3.9.8.2 refers to killing of cow in sacrificial way and says that yagna is the cow.
Taittireeya Samhita 4.2.10.2 directs not to kill an Aditi Viraaja cow.
Besides this, there are references in Puraanic texts here and there that sage Vasishtha sent his pupil Satyavrata for grazing of cow, but Satyavrata, on being hungry, killed the cow and ate it. At this, he earned the wrath of his guru. Similarly, there is the story of 7 pupils of Bhardwaaja? who also killed and ate the cow.
It seems strange that a society which gives so much reverence to cow, should have mention of killing of cow in it's sacred texts. To understand this mystery, we shall have to understand the esoteric meaning of cow deeply.
Vedic literature refers to the sunrays, earth, Vak/speech, etc. by the name of cow/gau. Our senses are also called cows. The word cow is interpreted on the basis of root gam, which in ordinary sense means to go and in esoteric sense as knowledge. Senses have been called cows as these give the knowledge of object to us. Earth receives the sunrays, hence it may be called cow. But a basic fact has to be understood here. On one side, there is sun, on the other side, it's rays. It is very easy to understand this fact in outer world. But when we go deep inside ourselves, then we find that the rising of inner sun is not a simple phenomenon. On comparingChhaandogya upanishada 2.14.1 and 2.18.1 we conclude that the state before sunrise is called Ajaa/goat. The state of rising of sun is called Avi/sheep. The state at noon is called gau/cow. The state in the afternoon is called an Ashva/horse. The state at sunset is called Purusha/man. The conclusion about the first three states is more or less confirmed by vedic texts. Rest two- horse and man, require further understanding. A goat has been confined to the state of heat. Many know how much heat is sometimes felt in meditation . This state has been kept in the category of goat. The next stage is the rise of sun. where it is felt that light from the face is evolving. This state has been classified under Avi/sheep. Sheep is full of hair. And these hair are used in somayaaga to filter the divine soma. The next state is of cow. This is the time when sunrays heat the surroundings, just as in outer world. This state has been given the highest significance in vedic literature. Regarding horse, it has been said that sun moves in the sky in the form of a horse.
There is universal reference in vedic literature ( Aitareya Brahmana 2.8, Taittireeya Brahmana 2.1.2.4 etc. ) that gods killed the animal man. It/s medha/intellect escaped and entered into horse. Then gods killled horse, it's intellect entered into cow, then cow's into sheep, sheep's into goat, goat's into earth and finally the medha of earth appeared in the form of rice ( and wheat). Almost the same sequence is followed in the days of a yaga called the 'invisible back six days'.
After this introduction, now we come back to the theme of this writing - what may be the meaning of killing of cow for satisfying hunger. Rigveda 10.42.10, 10.43.10, 10.44.10 says that let us remove bad intellect by cows and let us satisfy all our hunger by wheat. This mantra has also been repeated in Atharvaveda 7.52.7, 20.89.10 and 20.94.10. This repetetion is symbolic of the importance vedic seers have attached to it . This mantra directs satisfaction of hunger by wheat, not by cow. Cow is used to remove bad intellect and get good intellect, the consciousness at higher planes. Wheat is the lowest part of the intellect which escaped. One mantra says that wheat is connected with Varuna, the god who binds the sins with his rope. The origin of wheat is also from sunrays, Here it becomes implicit that either we use sunrays for the formation of a cow, or we let the growth of wheat . There are other view also about the esoteric aspect of wheat. According to Dr. Fatah Singh, wheat is connected in the middle. Similarly, if the 6 lower divisions of a man get connected to the 7th, the highest, he becomes wheat. This concept is not without vedic foundations. Some mantras of Rigveda mention of cows running for wheat. In ordinary sense, we all know how much wheat is likened by cow animal. But the mantras indicate that some hidden meanings are there. It seems that wheat may be connected with Aayu/age in vedic literature. Literature connected with yaga talks of age. Jaiminiya Brahmana 2.442 states that age connects, that is the real meaning. In vedic literature, age has been universally called as the calf of cow. Age is born by the copulation of light and cow. Rigvedic mantras state that cow runs after her calf.
It is important that vedic literature forbids killing of cow in unison, Aditi in any way( Taittireeya Samhita 4.2.10.2 etc. ) .
Guest in vedic literature :
Regarding Panini's aforism referring a guest as killer of cow, let us see what is meant by a guest in vedic literature. In somayaga, bundle of soma herb is purchased from a mean caste in exchange for a cow ( and at last, even the cow is snached from him). Then this bundle of soma is established in the Ist vedi/altar. This bundle remains intact until the ceremony of Pravargya is complete. There, this soma is called a guest. In Pravargya ceremony, we find that a huge mass of fire is generated by pouring of milk over boiling butter. After this formation is complete, then gods are offered oblations of this soma. It is expected that this huge ball of fire is nothing but the preparation of a sun. It has been mentioned in Brahmanical texts that when sun got very hot, then gods put air below it and moon above to absorb its burning rays. How can the soma named 'guest' be a killer of sunrays/gau/cow, is yet to be investigated.
The story of Satyavrata killing the cow of his guru to satisfy his hunger throws more light on a hidden aspect of killing of cow . Satyavrata also bears the name Gaalava - one who annihilates cow. He earned this name because her mother sold him to pruchase some cows. There are so many stories associated with Gaalava. In one story, he provides a horse to a warrior for annihilating a demon below the earth. This horse can go round the earth. This means that one who has the ability to kill cow, sunrays, can get hold of horse. Aitareya Brahmana points out that the sun at noon is cow state and that of afternoon in horse state. This indicates that once sunrays have started coming out of the sun, it is not easy to stop them. It is commonly assumed that a warrior rides on the horse while a brahmin brings up a cow. The meaning of word horse involves going beyond time. It is possible that cow may be bound with time.
Killing of animal in yagna :
There is another kind of killing of animals in somayaga. Sacred texts mention this killing as taking an animal to higher planes of consciousness. Every part of the animal is treated so that it may be able to invoke divine consciousness. The texts which deal with sacrificial procedures deal in detail how animal parts are to be prepared. But it is sad that during subsequent period, this type of sacrifices turned into wasteful killing of animals in the name of yangas and had to be stopped. Now a days, whosoever performs such yagnas, he makes a mock killing of animal, be it goat or anybody other. But at the same time, it is to be accepted that the exihibition of animal parts which may have been taking place in olden days, is missing now. May be one can find a replica of an animal in this age of modern science and use it exactly as it used to be in olden days.
Kundalini aspect of cow :
In context with daily yaga named Agnihotra, there are references that if a cow is sitting, she should be made to stand up with the help of a stick. The same type of saying is available in Hathayoga texts also regarding Kundalini. We all know that in yoga texts, kundalini has been depicted as a serpent which remains in it's dormant state throughout a normal life ( though, at the same time, it is also said that whatever is the activity in our life, it is all due to kundalini ). It is desirable that this be awakened and this serpent power is able to move throughout the universe. Therefore, whatever activity in our life is harmful to kundalini, will be considered as killing of cow. Take for example eating of food. As soon as we consume food, we tend to sleep. This is nothing but the kundalini going down.
DEMON VALA AND COW
As has been stated elsewhere in this website, the state before sunrise is called a goat, the state at sunrise is called a sheep, the state of mid - day is called a cow and the state of afternoon is called a horse. In case of demon Vala, the state of sheep is important. Sheep has plenty of hair and these hair in Indian mythology are called Vaala, or scattered rays. When one develops an aura around his face, as is depicted in case of pictures of great personalities, this is the state of Vaala or Vala. One needs to go further than that. One has to absorb this radiation within his body. This state will be called cow.
In Indian mythology, when demon Vala is killed by Indra, his parts fall on the earth and are converted into different gems. This statement is important because gems are supposed to concentrate the energy of this universe. This type of gems have been given the name of dice or axis in mythology. There is reference in Rigveda that one should not play dice with these gems and that the cows are the play of dice or player itself. It is possible that absorption of sunrays inside oneself can take place only when his body parts become gems. The more we are able to absorb rays of the sun inside ourselves, the lesser will be the dependence on the rays of the outer sun of this universe.
A Quest for New Materials में डा.
COW AND HORSE
As guessed from Chhaandogya Upanishada, the state of mid day is the state of cow and that of afternoon is that of horse. In the afternoon, the sunrays do not completely disappear, but it is expected that the horse is a state where one becomes inward? It is stated in mythology that sun moves in the sky as a horse. The reference of Rigveda 10.34.13 where there is directive that one should not play dice with gems, one should plough with them and that cows are the play of dice is important to understand difference between cow and horse. In puraanic literature, there is a universal statement of the placement of different gods in different parts of cow. The purpose behind this statement seems to be how to make different body parts of a cow perfect gems. The relation between gems/dice and horse has already been put forward by Dr. Fatah Singh at several places. In brief, the gems/dice represent penances limited to oneself, while the horse represents progress in unison with others, with the whole society. Combination of the two types is essential. The legendry king of puraanas knew the art of horse, but not that of gems. He could regain his consort Damayanti only when he was able to learn the art of gems, and as soon as he learnt the art of gems, sins came out of his body. Dr. Lakshmi Narayana Dhoot has gone one step further than this and has suggested that what is called the play of dice of gems, is actually the chance theory of nature. Every event in nature takes place as a chance. But as one goes beyond nature, towards Purusha, one finds a chain of cause and effect behind every event in nature. This may be the real difference between cow and horse. Until one is giver and one is acceptor of sunrays, then play of dice will take place. This is the state of cow. When only one sun remains, then there will be state of horse. The word meaning of horse, Ashwa is - where there is no future, only present.
Regarding the calling of a guest as killer of cow by Grammarian Paanini, the coming of guest is a chance and cow is also connected with chance. Then how a guest can be the killer of cow is a subject to be investigated further. Waxing and waning of moon gives rise to different days of a fortnight in Indian mythology. If there is no waxing and waning, then there will be no separate day of a fortnight. This is what is implied by the sanskrit word Atithi - without separate days. It has been stated in puraanic literature that whatever part of moon is lost in the sky, that is absorbed by herbs on the earth. Hence, if there is no waxing and waning of moon, then its connection with the earth, which is a cow, will be lost and that can be interpreted as killing of cow.
In nature, the earth revolves around the sun. But there are stories in puraanas where a horse appears before a sage which is able to revolve around the earth. Esoteric meaning of this fact is open for investigation.
It is important to state that in modern sciences, there is confusion about the nature of sunrays - whether these have particle or quantum nature, or wave nature. Some physical events can be explained on the basis of particle nature while others on the basis of wave nature.
USHAA AND COW
There are references of two types of Ushaas or goddess of dawn in vedic literature - cow type and horse type. Further, Ushaa has been divided into two parts - one of earlier type and the other of new type. Ushaa has also been called the mother of cows.
It seems strange that in the sacred text called Shatapatha Brahmana, the chapter of arrangement of fire starts with procurement of Ukhaa. This ukhaa is given the shape of a cow having nipples also. Later on, the whole arrangement of fire seems to be being done around this ukhaa. On one side there is ukhaa having nature of cow, on the other side is the goddess of dawn Ushaa having double nature of cow and horse.
As has been stated in the comment on Ushaa, at dawn, all creatures are awakened. The actual awakening is one where there is lowest disorder. This disorder in modern scientific language is called entropy. The purpose behind the whole arrangement of fire is to keep the entropy minimum. Entropy is of two types - reversible and irreversible, just like earlier and newer Ushaa. In vedic literature, the cows have been stated to milch the irreversible or earlier types of Ushaas.
SARMAA AND COW
In Indian mythology, a divine bitch called Sarmaa is deputed to trace the cows which have been stolen by demons called Panis. Panis try to bribe Sarma. It seems irrevalent to put this narrative in mythology but it is not so. Neither vedic nor puraanic literature has left any thread to understand nature of Sarma. Her nature can be understood from the details of a sacrifice called Gavaamayana. In this yaga, there are two types of sacrifices - one which is called jumping, by which gods make quick progress. The other is of slow progress for those who can not take a jump. It seems that Sarma chose the path of quick jump by ignoring the temptations of worldly pleasures of second type of yaga. In first type of yaga, only cow and horse are involved in details of yaga, while in second type of yaga, cow, horse, goat, sheep, rice and barley are involved. Regarding the nature of demons Panis who steal the cows, it is proposed that these demons try to maintain the demonical part of one's individuality through food obtained from cows, just like the leaves of a tree create food from sunrays for the whole tree.
DIVINE COWSHED VRAJA AND COW
Some rigvedic mantras refer to cowsheds solely devoted to cows, while in some mantras there is mention of cow and horse types, just as in case of Ushaa. Some mantras refer to opening of cowsheds like the sunset. The word used for sunset in Sanskrit is Asta, which closely resembles with English word Astable, the place for horses. The esoteric meaning of Asta is where the fruits of actions have ceased to exist. Vedic and puraanic literature mentions that cows can be made to sit collectively only in Vraja, the divine cowshed, a place where there no longer exist the fruits of actions or karmaphala. There is one place in puraanas where word Vraja has been interpreted and this tally with the above concept.
There are so many efforts in modern sciences to make a dense beam of sunrays. It will be interesting to investigate how mythology and modern sciences can help each other in this regard.
CALF AND COW
There are mantras in Rigveda which mention of a cow running after her calf. In a particular type of sacrifice called Pravargya, a calf is deprived of his mother's milk and the milk is used for sacrifice. This seems to be a cruel act. But the riddle is solved when one understands the symbolism behind calf. One Upanishadic text refers to cow as symbolic of memory. In Vedic literature, there are two types of voices - one Shruti which is the purest form. But this can not be heard all the time and by all people. At mortal stage, this is converted into Smriti, or one which is repeated from memory. In puraanic texts, there seem to be several symbolisms for Smriti, like sage Durvaasaa, the tenth day of a fortnight etc. Even barley has been found to be a combination of Shruti and Smriti, because it is connected in the middle.
BARLEY AND COW
There is one mantra of Rigveda which has been repeated thrice. This says that let us remove non – intelligence with cows and hunger with barley. Rigvedic mantras again and again mention the fondness of cow towards barley. Is it just an utterance of a shepherd or something deep may be hidden here? Let us try to see.
First we try to understand the nature of barley according to vedic literature. According to Shatapatha Brahmana 1.7.2.25, the waxing and waning of the moon is an act of gods and demons. Gods are the ones who add, while demons subtract. Or it may be vice versa also. Puraanic texts say that the moon which is waning, goes to herbs on the earth. As has been stated in comments on herbs, in vedic literature herbs represent the higher state of consciousness. According to modern thinkers, the visible part of moon represents the conscious mind while the invisible part the unconsciousness mind. From both point of views, the coming of moon on earth indicates that in terms of vedic language, it is the conversion of Shruti into Smriti/memory. This is like a barley which is connected in the middle.
What can be the connection of wisdom or intelligence with cows? Taittireeya Aaranyaka 5.6.8 says that this which is Pravargya is the father of wisdom and that the wisdom of poet is the best. It is essential to understand Pravargya. In this sacrifice, butter is boiled in an earthen vessel and cow and got milk is poured on it which gives rise to high fire. This fire is worshipped by vedic mantras which indicate that it may be a form of moon. One rigvedic mantra indicates that the heat is ultimately converted into high rising fire. What is the contribution of cows in it ? It is possible that the more the rays/gau/cows of our inner sun are absorbed in ourselves, the more heat is produced and consequently high rising will be the Pravargya.
Shatapatha 8.1.2.7 states that wisdom is on upper side and moon can also be on the upper side. This indicates that wisdom can be of two types – sun type and moon type. In Mahabharata, consort of Dhritarashtra, Gaandhaari has been stated as an incarnation of wisdom. Taittireeya Aaranyaka 5.6.8 states that progeny is wisdom. In vedic language, progeny should be taken as wisdom itself( Prajnya). As far as the statement of wisdom of poets being the best is concerned, the emergence of nonviolence is the birth of a poet. One example of this is of Vaalmeeki who spontaneously uttered a mantra when he saw violence.
