In Sanskrit, a heap or group is called Vrindaa. There is no direct clue in puraanic literature to understand this word. This can be understood on the basis of a collective ocean of consciousness into which all living beings dissolve after death. Almost all the religions believe that a creature comes from this collective ocean of consciousness and dissolves into it after death. Human being is an exception, as it has developed an identity around itself which prevents it from dissolution. This can be given the name of individual consciousness. It can be said that individual consciousness can develop itself by becoming one with supreme god, or in other words, by forming a trio of praana, vaak and mind or sun, earth and moon, which revolve around each other. As far as the development of ocean of consciousness is concerned, it can be understood on the principle of random motion or the principle of increase of entropy. This can be understood on the basis of example of a drunken person who tries to reach his home but there is least possibility that he can ever reach home because each one of his step is random. Until there is a desire to reach in a particular direction, he will remain where he was. The same is the situation with nature also. The development in nature can be divided into 3 parts according to the intensity of desire. The first is the Sat, the pious one where there is upward development, decrease in entropy. The second is Tamas, the dark one, where there is an increase in entropy, as in this physical world. The third one is action – oriented, Rajas. Those actions by which the situation remains unchanged, can be said to fall under this category. Though god has gifted the faculties of praaana and mind to the living beings below the rank of humans, still they mainly act according to the impulses of lower nature. And everybody is familiar with the slow pace of development in nature which has taken millions of years for development of human body. The other side is the upper nature which receives impulses for it’s development directly from god himself. While the chance theory plays a dominant role in lower nature, the gets weakened on development of higher consciousness. Bhaagvata Puraana mentions grace of god as the only instrument of development of lower nature. The same thing can be said about Vrindaa also.

The word Vrindaa does not appear at least directly either in Vedas or vedic literature. Still, the classical glossary of vedic words has put word vrinda after the word bunda under the class of steps. This is strange that a word does not appear in Vedas and still it finds place in the glossary. The legendary figure Yaaska has explained the word bunda and after that, has simply stated that vrinda has been explained. This implies that the explanation of vrinda lies in bunda. Word bunda appears only 3 times in Rigveda. Yaska has explained the mantra in the way that there is a bow which can throw to a very large distance, a golden bunda or arrow and the divine hands handle that arrow. This arrow is released on mountains so that the odana/rice gets prepared. This statement and the statement of Lakshminaaraayana Samhita can become the keys to understand the word Vrindaa. In Lakshminaaraayana Samhita, there is a statement that Vrindaa releases a weapon called Shaalagraama which destroys the weapon of clouds. In puraanic literature, the daughter of demon Kaalnemi becomes the wife of Jalandhara. Jalandhara means one who holds the water, the clouds. What is this water, this can be explained in different ways. If one contemplates on the meaning expressed by vedic mantra, then this water is one which prepares the rice. It means that water which ripens the life forces present at the moment. Otherwise, this water can be anything which supports life. And the arrow or thunderbolt made of Vrinda has the power to release the water withheld in clouds or mountains. According to Dr. Fatah Singh, our personality has two main parts – mortal and immortal. The immortal part can be called a mountain in Sanskrit. Therefore, what is meant by releasing an arrow named bunda/Vrinda is that the powers of immortal level descend at mortal level. Dr. Lakshminarayan Dhoot thinks that this arrow is the craving of human being. The stronger is the craving, the stronger will be the arrow. Hence, it can be said that Vrindaa, the daughter of demon Kaalanemi is the craving which can release water from Jalandhara, his husband. In puraanic story, lord Vishnu deceive Vrindaa and Vrindaa gets herself destroyed in fire. Three goddesses Lakshmi, Ramaa and Gauri sow their own seeds in the ash of Vrindaa from which three trees are grown which are symbolic of Sat, Raja and Tama. It has to be investigated to how much extent this part of the story can be explained on the basis of the thesis of Dr. Lakshminarayan Dhoot.
