Pārvatī’s Advice, Full of Irony!

"रामाद्याचय मेदिनीं, धनपतेर्ब्बीजं, बलाल्लाङ्गलं,
प्रेतेशान्महिषं, तवास्ति वृषभः, फालं त्रिशूलं तव |
शक्ताहं तव चान्नदानकरणे, स्कन्दोऽस्ति गोरक्षणे
खिन्नाहं हर भिक्षया, कुरु कृषिं, " गौरी वच: पातु वः ||
"rāmādyācaya mēdinīṁ, dhanapatērbbījaṁ, balāllāṅgalaṁ,
prētēśānmahiṣaṁ, tavāsti vr̥ṣabhaḥ, phālaṁ triśūlaṁ tava |
śaktāhaṁ tava cānnadānakaraṇē, skandō’sti gōrakṣaṇē
khinnāhaṁ hara bhikṣayā, kuru kr̥ṣiṁ, " gaurī vaca: pātu vaḥ ||

This delightful stanza becomes more delightful if it is re-imagined as a conversation between Jaganmātā Pārvatī and Jagatpitā Paramēśvara starting with the fourth line:

Pārvatī — O Hara, I am saddened by Your vocation of Begging. Start Farming.

Paramēśvara — Farm where ? I possess no land.

Pārvatī — Beg for land from Paraśurāma. He is your foremost disciple in martial arts. And He has plenty of farmland after His destruction of the royal clans on the earth whose land became His by the laws of war.

Paramēśvara — But I have no seeds in my possession.

Pārvatī — Beg for some seeds from Kubēra. He is your best friend and His wealth must include the wealth of seeds, the root cause of all prosperity except those of jewels and precious metals.

Paramēśvara — But I have no plough.

Pārvatī — Beg for a plough from Balarāma also known as Hali = the Ploughman. He is, after all, an incarnation of śēṣa, who is a divine serpent related to Vāsuki, whom You wear as a garland around Your neck.

Paramēśvara — But You forget that the plough is pulled by animals.

Pārvatī — Beg for the buffalo from Yama, who will comply because You had once destroyed Him to save Mārkaṇḍēya from mortality.

Paramēśvara — But You forget that there need be two animals per plough.

Pārvatī — You forget that You have a bull, and if He can carry us, He can carry a plough.

Paramēśvara — But I have no tool to dig the seed holes with.

Pārvatī — Do not forget Your Trident — it can dig three holes at one plunge!

Paramēśvara - The farming work will make me hungry and if I do not beg, who will feed me ?

Pārvatī — I am annapūrṇā, so I can and will feed You, Soon-to-be-Farmer!

Paramēśvara — Who will take care of the animals ? Remember I am Paśupati and I cannot ignore my animals.

Pārvatī — We can beg Skanda, our own son, to do the animal upkeep.

(The poem ends with a benediction: May these words of Pārvatī bless you all!)

Did Jaganmātā Pārvatī realize the irony in Her advice to follow which Paramēśvara would have to do extensive Begging so that He can become a Farmer and stop Begging?

To continue to be a Beggar, on the other hand, He would have only to go as far as the house of ONE generous neighbor on Kailāsa!

[There is a modern resonance to this poetic anecdote: all over the world, Farmers who feed the rest of the population have to borrow money from Bankers and often beg for debt forgiveness as well as price stabilizing subsidies at the gates of Politicians!!]

Note : (Shubha from Sanskrit Bharati, Sambhashana Sandesha, in चाटुचणकः(शिवः) chATuchaNakaH shivaH post on wikiquote.org) कदाचित् पार्वती शिवम् उक्तवती - 'भवतः भिक्षायाचनं दृष्ट्वा अहं खिन्ना अस्मि । अतः कृपया कृषिं करोतु' इति । तदा शिवः अपृच्छत् - 'किं कृषिः सुका ? तदर्थं नास्ति भूमिः अस्माकम् । जीबहलादयः न सन्ति । वृषभाः न सन्ति । वृषभाः यदि भवेयुः तर्हि तेषां पोषणरक्षणादिकं करणीयम् । किम् एतत्सर्वं शक्यम् ?' इति । तदा पार्वती एकैकम् अपि समस्या परिहरन्ती अवदत् - 'परशुरामः समग्रभूमण्डलमेव स्ववशीकृतवान् अस्ति । ततः भूमिं प्राप्नोतु । कुबेरः धनधान्याधिपः । सः भवतः मित्रम् । ततः बीजार्थं धान्यं प्राप्नोतु । यमात् महिषं प्राप्नोतु । भवतः वृषभः अस्ति एव । अतः तौ एव हले योजयामः । भवतः त्रिशूलं हलाग्रं (फालं भवतु) कृषिसमये आहारम् आनीय दातुं गोपोषणार्थं च अहम् अस्मि । स्कन्दः गोरक्षणं करिष्यति । एवं विशेषव्ययं विना कृषिः शक्या' इति । एतादृशानि गौरीवचनानि भवतः सर्वान् रक्षन्तु ।
