1) Purpose
===========================================================
This utility displays a sloka at a time from the Bhagavad Gita. The utility was
developed to enable Bhagavad Gita lovers to keep in touch with the slokas, one
sloka at a time, throughout the day.  See below for various options available.

2) Versions
===========================================================

There are two version available :

bgt-r 	- 	Translation by Dr. Ramanand Prasad
bgt-m	-	Based on Sri Madhvacharya's commentary
		[In progress]


bgt-r provides the following :
------------------------------
slokas 		- Slokas extracted from the ITRANS version available
		  on-line.
translation 	- Meanings extracted from the original translation by
		  Dr. Ramanand Prasad
word meanings 	- Extracted from "BhagavadGita As It Is" by
		  Srila Prabhupada of ISKON
(Contact information is available at the end of this readme)


bgt-m provides the following :
------------------------------
slokas 		- Extracted from the ITRANS version
translation 	- Follows Sri MadhvAchArya's bhAshya and tAtparya
		  (Currently only 3rd chapter is available)
word meanings 	- Follows Sri MadhvAchAryas bhAshya/tAtparya

3) Installation
===========================================================
Unix
----
1. Uncompress the accompanying .Z file
	Type: uncompress *Z
2. Untar the file 
	Type: tar -xvf *.tar
3. Compile the source 
	Type: cc -o vwslk vwslk.c
4. Init the database by running:
	bgt-r.sh -init
	or
	bgt-m.sh -init
5. If you would like to view a sloka at the login time,
   insert the following in your login script :
	(Directory_where_vwslk_is_stored)/bgt-r.sh -d (or bgt-m.sh -d)
6. Follow the usage options below


DOS
---
1. Unzip the .zip file
2. Init the database by running:
	type: bgt-r.bat -init (or bgt-m.bat -init)
3. If you would like to view a sloka at bootup time,
   insert the following in your autoexec.bat file :
	(Directory_where_bgt_is_stored)\bgt-r -d (or bgt-m -d)
4. Follow the usage options below

NOTE: For Win95/Win NT .pif files are included for easier access.

4) Available Options
===========================================================

Operations :
------------
-d  			Display one sloka per day
-n  			Display Next sloka in the database
-r  			Display a randomly chosen sloka
-s chapter#.xx  	Search for a sloka (eg., -s 3.26)

Display Modes :
---------------
-v 		 Display verse
-t 		 Display English translation
-w 		 Display word meanings
-ps		 Display in pure ITRANS format which can be converted to
		 PostScript format using the ITRANS package

Configuration
-------------
-init		reset current sloka to the beginning
		[This is useful to restart the -d option print
		 out to start from the beginning]
[-fi .ini file]	Use the specified .ini file name

5) Example usage :
===========================================================

1. To call from a login script and display verse, translation and word meaning
   use :
	bgt-r.sh -d -vtw
or 
	bgt-m.sh -d -vtw

(use the .bat extension for DOS/Windows)

New messages will come up on a daily basis

==========NOTE on .pif files =========
For Win95/Win NT, *.pif files have pre-stored options.  Edit the path
in the properties of these files and then you can drag these to your
desktop for easy access. (Right click the mouse on the .pif file to 
access its properties and double click on the file to run it)

bgt-r.pif/bgt-m.pif 	- automatically invoke -d option for daily mode usage
init-r.pif/init-m.pif	- Init the database to start from the beginning

2. To display a randomly chosen sloka use :
	bgt-r.sh -r -vtw
or
	bgt-m.sh -r -vtw

3. To display the next sloka in the database use :
	bgt-r.sh -n -vtw
or
	bgt-m.sh -n -vtw

4. To search for a specific sloka use :
	bgt-r.sh -s chapter.xx -vtw
or
	bgt-m.sh -s chapter.xx -vtw

Eg., bgt-r.sh -s 3.26 will display 26th sloka from the 3rd chapter

5. To print in ITRANS format (convertible to PostScript) use :
	Add -ps to the above commands
	Use ITRANS package to convert the resulting file to PostScript
	[Check the following sites on how to convert the resulting file
	 to postscript :
	 by using e-mail:

	 by using ITRANS package:
	 http://dworkin.wustl.edu/~hari/itrans.html

6. To initialize the database :
	bgt-r.sh -init
or
	bgt-m.sh -init
