Encoding Scheme
---------------

The True Type fonts in JMSKRDIA.ZIP for transliterating devanaagarii
characters follow the scheme adopted by the International Congress of
Orientalists at Athens, Greece, in 1912--as described in detail in
publications of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Madras:

      One tialde : ~n ] Per
One accent : sh ] ITRANS
    Four macrons : A I U R^I ] En-
   Two over-dots : M ~N ] cod-
Eight under-dots : R^i R^I H L^i T D N Sh ] ing

Keybord Locations
-----------------
The fonts provide both upper and lower-case characters, located in the
top-row keys in the US keyboard, plus in the {}|\<>/ keys, which makes it
very convenient for quick typing. (The Itrans code is given beneath each
key):

~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + { } < > [Upper]
A I U R^i R^I M H L^i T ( ) D ~N N ~n Sh sh [Case ]

` 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 4 - = [ ] | \ / [Lower]
A I U R^i R^I M H L^i T D ~N - N [ ] ~n Sh sh [Case ]

- For single words or sentences, among latin text, after encoding,
select and define character set: e.g. Shiva: >iva, Vishnu: Vi\=u.

- For text without numerals etc. define whole document with diacritic
character set -- as a result, diacritics will appear side by side
with latin without having to interrupt typing. Numerals or other
non-alphabetic characters can be defined in another character set.

- For spreadsheet column, to transliterate directly, simply define the
diacritic character set for the column .**

Reference Card
--------------
JMSKRDIA.GIF provides a convenient reference card for the diacritic
fonts and for the Omkarananda SANS-NEW.TTF. Cellotape it to your monitor.

Conversion to devanaagarii via ITRANSLATOR 1.1
----------------------------------------------
Swami Omkarananda's free conversion utility, ITRANSLATOR 1.1 (running in
another window) can, via ITRANS code, generate devnaagarii directly
pastable into a wordprocessor or spreadsheet.

Diacritically encoded text can be converted to ITRANS encoding for
converting to devanaagarii via FIND & REPLACE and negligible adjustment:

For a long glossary list in spreadsheet:

1. Paste a copy of the transliterated word-list in one column

2. Make a working copy of this in an adjacent column to the left, in which:
   a. FIND transliteration character and REPLACE with appropriate Itrans code;
   b. Selectively FIND & REPLACE non-diacritic characters
      c = ch, cch = chchh = chCh
      silent endings am = am.h, im = im.h, it = it.h, an = an.h etc
occasional specific silent consonant within words .h (by inspection)
   c. Doublecheck and adjust before pasting ITRANS code into ITRANSLATOR.

3. Select all and paste into ITRANSLATOR and convert to devanaagarii

4. Select all devanaagarii in ITRANSLATOR and paste back into 2nd column to
the left of the Itrans code. Thus, there will be three columns:
Devanaagarii/Itrans code/transliterated text (you may elect a different
order, but always have an empty column to right of devanaagarii column).

5. Review devanaagarii amd adjust via keyboard for SANSKRIT-NEW font.

Finishing touches are necessary in 2.c, such as adding `o.a' etc,
as well as occasional fixing of ligatures etc in 5. Familiarity with
the Itrans encoding enables quick adaptation.

The conversion procedure is not all that great an inconvenience for the
payoff, which is that you don't have to leave your wordprocessor or
spreadsheet!

Acknowledgments
---------------
All this is made possible thanks to Swami Omkarananda's ITRANSLATOR
which uses Avinash Chopde's innovative ITRANS encoding scheme, copy of
which is in his Common Errors File, included in this ZIP. Those with more
professional needs may like to explore the possibilities of ITRANS 5.1.

Enjoy!

---------------
PROBLEM
** However, character `Sh' causes truncation of devanaagarii in MSWORKS 4.0
spreadsheet (Maybe it is OK in EXCEL). The truncated part is pasted in
adjacent column to right. That is why 4. above recommends pasting the
devanaagarii in second column to left of the Itrans code. No problem
noted when collectively pasting to word-processor document.
