अक्षरशकुनम्
उपोद्घातः
``अक्षरशकुना'' ख्योयं ग्रन्थः तञ्जापुरविराजमान ``सरस्वतिमहाल्'' पुस्तकालयादुद्धृत इदम्प्रथमतया प्रकाश्यते । एतद्ग्रन्थपरिशीलनेनैवास्यात्यावश्यकतां विद्युर्विद्वांस इति नातीवाद्यात्र विषये व्याप्रियामहे । संस्कृतानभिज्ञानामपि शकुनावगतिसौलभ्याय, द्राविड्या आङ्ग्ल्या च रचितौ द्वौ विपरिणामावत्र प्रकटीकृतौ ।
शकुनावेक्षणप्रकारः ।
आदौ स्वेष्टदेवतानुस्मरणपूर्वकं पुस्तकमिदमुद्घाटनीयम् । तथा कृते प्रथमतः, यौ तावत् पुटौ दैववशात् सन्दृश्येते, ताभ्यामेव शकुनान्यवगन्तव्यानि ।
आदौ उद्घाटितयोः पुटयोर्मध्ये दक्षिणपार्श्वस्थपुटे शीर्षत एकमक्षरमीक्ष्येत । तत्रैव मध्यतः तादृशाक्षरदर्शनकाले का नाम देवता प्रसन्नेति लिखितमस्ति । तत्रैव चाधोभागे सङ्क्षेपतः तदक्षरदर्शनफलं शुभं, अशुभं वेति निर्दिष्टं वर्तते । तस्यैव शुभस्याशुभस्य वा प्रकारविशेषाः तत्रैव वामपार्श्वस्थपुटादवगन्तव्याः । अतः शकुनप्रतिपादकग्रन्थान्तरापेक्षया ग्रन्थोऽयं सुलभतया, असन्दिग्ध तया च शकुनानि बोधयतीति शक्यते वक्तुम् ।
नानाकार्यव्यग्रत्वेऽपि ग्रन्थस्यास्याङ्गलभाषायां विपरिणामकरणे उपकृतवद्भ्यः वीरराघवकलाशालाध्यक्षेभ्यः टि श्रीनिवास अय्यङ्गार् महाशयेभ्यः सप्रणयं, सवहुमानं चास्मदीयां कृतज्ञतां निवेदयामः ॥

PREFACE TO FIRST EDITION
`Akshara Sakunam' is one of the best books on Sakuna Sastram and is in the famous Saraswathi Mahal Library, Tanjore. It has not been published so far. As it is one of the best books on this particular branch of Astrology, we have translated it into English and Tamil so that readers may themselves see and understand its merit and usefullness.
HOW TO KNOW YOUR SAKUNA FROM THIS?
First pray to your God. Then open the book suddenly and at random. On the right-hand page which is seen first, a letter is given at the top. Just below the letter, You can find which God is Prasanna at the time. At the bottom the Sakuna phalam is given briefly and on the left hand, it is written in detail. If it is auspicious, then favourable things will occur; and if inauspicious, only unfavourable, though not wholly evil, results will follow.
From what is said here and from the translations given, it will be very clear to the readers that this book is more useful to us than many other Sanskrit works
which deal with Sakuna.

WHAT IS AKSHARASAKUNAM ?

Of the several branches of ancient Hindu Chiromancy, interpretation of omens and fortunates by reference to the letters of the alphabet, which are believed to be endowed with esoteric, and mystic significance had been popular for years. Mr. R. Muthukrishna Sastry, Editor of ‘Hithabashini’ Tanjore, has published for the first time, a rare work in Sanskrit found in the Tanjore Serfoji Maharaja's Saraswathi Mahal Library, dealing with this branch of ancient Hindu occultism. The work contains fifty Sanskrit stanzas in aṇushtup metre each corresponding to a single letter of the Sanskrit alphabet. The text is printed in Devanagari, and each stanza has been immediately translated into both Tamil and English.
One about to commence any undertaking has to open the booklet at random. On the right hand side, there would be a letter of the alphabet. Each letter is connected with its own presiding deity. On the left hand page, the auspicious or inauspicious nature is indicated. The booklet may also be viewed as dealing with a form of horary astrology. The booklet constitutes No. 4 of the ‘Hita-bashini’ Publication series on which Mr. Muthukrishna Sastriar has to be congratulated by all lovers of Sanskrit and Astrology.
