Notes:
Shiva has five faces, and one of them is Vamadeva (वामदेव). Every form of Shiva has many Shaktis that represent different divine powers such as Iccha Shakti, Jnana Shakti, and Kriya Shakti. In the same way, the Vamadeva aspect of Shiva has nine divine Shaktis.
These nine Shaktis are वामा, ज्येष्ठा, रौद्री, काली, कालविकारिणी, बलविकारिणी, बलप्रमथनी, सर्वभूतदमनी, and मनोन्मनी.
These Shaktis are connected with the famous Vamadeva Mantra that is recited during Mala Samskara and other Shaiva rituals.
From this mantra the names of the nine Shaktis are derived. वामदेव becomes वामा. ज्येष्ठ becomes ज्येष्ठा. रुद्र becomes रौद्री. काल becomes काली. कलविकरण becomes कालविकारिणी. बलविकरण becomes बलविकारिणी. बलप्रमथन becomes बलप्रमथनी. सर्वभूतदमन becomes सर्वभूतदमनी. मनोन्मन becomes मनोन्मनी.
These nine Shaktis are the Anga Devatas and Anga Devis of Vamadeva. They reside in the Vamadeva Yantra and are worshipped as the divine powers of the Vamadeva aspect of Shiva.
The complete iconography of these Shaktis is not available today because their individual Dhyana Shlokas are not widely preserved. The Vamadeva tradition is not as well known as some other Shaiva traditions, and many old ritual texts have been lost over time.
Among these nine Shaktis, मनोन्मनी is regarded as the principal Shakti of Vamadeva.
In the Vamadeva Yantra the nine Shaktis are arranged on a white lotus. वामा resides in the east. ज्येष्ठा resides in the southeast. रौद्री resides in the south. काली resides in the southwest. कालविकारिणी resides in the west. बलविकारिणी resides in the northwest. बलप्रमथनी resides in the north. सर्वभूतदमनी resides in the northeast. मनोन्मनी resides in the centre.
The first eight Shaktis occupy the eight petals of the lotus and govern the eight directions. मनोन्मनी, who is the supreme Shakti of Vamadeva, resides with वामदेव at the bindu in the centre of the lotus.
The Shaiva Agamas also describe these nine Shaktis as residing in Shuddhavidya Tattva, one of the pure realms of Shaiva philosophy.
Although the names appear in the Yajurveda, it is the Shaiva Agamas, especially the Kamika Agama, the Karana Agama, and later ritual manuals such as the Soma Shambhu Paddhati, that clearly arrange them as the Navashaktis or the Nine Shaktis.
During the worship of the Panchasana, the five tiered spiritual throne of Shiva, the Vamadeva Mantra governs the Lotus Seat. The Agamas describe these nine Shaktis as the presiding female deities of the nine directions and the nine petals surrounding the divine energy of वामदेव.
These Shaktis belong specifically to the वामदेव aspect of Shiva. They should not be understood as the attendants of Shiva in general. Each of the five faces of Shiva has its own divine powers, Shaktis, and sacred forms.
According to some later Shaiva and Tantric traditions, the eight outer Shaktis are also identified with the eight Matrikas. Their corresponding Bhairavas are identified with the Ashta Bhairavas, although this interpretation is not described in the same way in every Shaiva scripture.
These dhyAna shlokas are from मनोन्मनी यन्त्र पूजा क्रम.
