WELCOME!

Welcome to ‘atha yoganusasanam’, a website devoted to yoga philosophy and to the techniques of “viniyoga”.

I hope you find it useful.

It is still very much a work in progress, as I update and add to the materials on my previous home site. The main structure is in place, so you can get an idea of what it will contain when it’s finished (as far as any website is finished).

I’m interested in any comments or suggestions you readers want to offer. That includes telling me about any links that may not work or anything that make it difficult for you to find your way around. I’d also like to know if the Sanskrit shows up properly. Some things I know about anyway, and will fix when I have the time; other glitches may be obvious to you but not to me!

The main purpose of the site is to provide a sort of reference section on yoga philosophy. When I began the practice of yoga (in 1987) I really knew nothing about the philosophy, and remained in a state of ignorance for quite some time. It wasn’t until about 1995, when my yoga class teacher brought in a few books that she had acquired but didn’t need, that I discovered there was more to yoga than asana and some very simple (and poorly explained) pranayama. When I decided to train as a yoga teacher, the main purpose was really to learn more about the philosophy, and that’s where it really all began to come together.

The Philosophy section of the site covers the Yoga Sutras, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads.

No chapter in the Sutra pages is in its final form, as material is only complete for about half the sutras, but I have put up what I’ve done so far. Most of the in-text links still have to be added - the way they worked on the previous site may not always work correctly here! I also have a fair bit of work to do on the other texts.

I have also included two other things in the philosophy section:

(1) a booklist, containing the books I have found the most useful, and I will add to it from time to time;

(2) a glossary of philosophy concepts, covering the commonest terms that people may come across and be puzzled by.

I will record information about updates here, from time to time.

Sunday 27th July 08 I expanded this introductory page and added a holding page for Hatha Yoga Pradipika.

Monday 04/08/08 I updated pages on YS Chapters 3 and 4.

Wednesday06/08/08 I added the full page on HYP.

Friday 17/04/09 I tidied up the philosophy links to imrove access.

We are sad to announce that Margo passed away in 2014. Obituary. Also Her Facebook

May she rest in peace!
