||गोविंद दामोदर स्तोत्र ||
 
अग्रे कुरूनाम् अथ पाण्डवानां दुःशासनेनाहृत वस्त्रकेशा |
कृष्णा तदाक्रोशदनन्यनाथ गोविंद दामोदर माधवेति ||||

agre kurUnAm.h atha pANDavAnAM
          duHshAsanenAhRita vastrakeshA |
kRiShNA tadAkroshadananyanAtha
          govi.nda dAmodara mAdhaveti ||||
krshNA (draupadI, the dark beauty) was pulled by her robes and hair
and dragged by duhSAsana, in front of the kuru and the pANdava;
with none to protect her, she wailed then, gOvinda! dAmOdara! mAdhava!                             |

श्रीकृष्ण विष्णो मधुकैटभारे भक्तानुकम्पिन् भगवन् मुरारे |
त्रायस्व माम् केशव लोकनाथ गोविंद दामोदर माधवेति ||||

shrIkRiShNa viShNo madhukaiTabhAre
          bhaktAnukampin.h bhagavan.h murAre |
trAyasva mAm.h keshava lokanAtha
          govi.nda dAmodara mAdhaveti ||||
SrI krshNa! vishNu! O the foe of madhu and
kaiTabha! you verily are compassionate unto
 your devotee!   Rescue me, O bhagavan!
Enemy of mura, kESava, lord of the worlds!
gOvinda! dAmOdara! mAdhava!
bhagavAn - characterised by 'bhaga', the combination of
the qualities of jnAnam, Sakti, balam, aiSvaryam,
 vIryam and tejas, as defined in vishNu purANam |                             |

विक्रेतुकाम अखिल गोपकन्या मुरारी पदार्पित चित्तवृत्त्यः |
दध्योदकं मोहवसादवोचद् गोविंद दामोदर माधवेति ||||

vikretukAma akhila gopakanyA murArI
          padArpita chittavRittyaH |
dadhyodakaM mohavasAdavochad.h
          govi.nda dAmodara mAdhaveti ||||
The gOpa lass had forfeited her heart
to the feet of murAri;  and
wanting to sell yogurt,
she called out absent-mindedly,
gOvinda! dAmOdara! mAdhava!                             |

जगधोय दत्तो नवनीत पिण्डः गृहे यशोदा विचिकित्सयानि |
उवाच सत्यं वद हे मुरारे गोविंद दामोदर माधवेति ||||

jagadhoya datto navanIta piNDaH
          gRihe yashodA vichikitsayAni |
uvAcha satyaM vada he murAre
          govi.nda dAmodara mAdhaveti ||||
yaSOdA said, Tell me the truth, murAri!
gOvinda! dAmOdara! mAdhava!

जिह्वे रसाग्रे मधुरा प्रिया त्वं सत्यं हितं त्वं परमं वदामि |
अवर्णयेत मधुराक्षराणि गोविंद दामोदर माधवेति ||||

jihve rasAgre madhurA priyA tvaM
          satyaM hitaM tvaM paramaM vadAmi |
avarNayeta madhurAxarANi
          govi.nda dAmodara mAdhaveti ||||
These verily are very euphonious syllables,
they constitute Truth,
they are the supreme comfort,
they are dear to us,
 repeat them to savour on the tip of the tongue,
gOvinda! dAmOdara! mAdhava!                             |

गोविंद गोविंद हरे मुरारे गोविंद गोविंद मुकुंद कृष्ण |
गोविंद गोविंद रथांगपाणे गोविंद दामोदर माधवेति ||||

govi.nda govi.nda hare murAre
          govi.nda govi.nda muku.nda kRiShNa |
govi.nda govi.nda rathA.ngapANe
          govi.nda dAmodara mAdhaveti ||||
chakrapANi, one adorning the chakra-discus;
 the divyAyudham, the divine weaponry, is
 borne by him as trinket, divyAbharaNam!                              |

सुखावसाने त्विदमेव सारं दुःखावसाने त्विदमेव गेयम् |
देहावसाने त्विदमेव जप्यं गोविंद दामोदर माधवेति ||||

sukhAvasAne tvidameva sAraM
          duHkhAvasAne tvidameva geyam.h |
dehAvasAne tvidameva japyaM
          govi.nda dAmodara mAdhaveti ||||
This the essence and ultimate of happiness;
this is what one would chant at the height of grief;
and gOvinda |||this is what one would utter when
departing from hither.
gOvinda! dAmOdara! mAdhava!                             |

वक्तुं समर्थोपि नवक्ति कश्चित् अहो जनानां व्यसनाभिमुख्यम् |
जिह्वे पिबस्वमृतमेतदेव गोविंद दामोदर माधवेति ||||

vaktuM samarthopi na vakti kashchit.h
          aho janAnAM vyasanAbhimukhyam.h |
jihve pibasvamRitametadeva
          govi.nda dAmodara mAdhaveti ||||
He who speaks can tell these Names, but few do it!
thus, alas, is men's orientation towards suffering.
But, my lips, drink of this and this very elixir,
 gOvinda, dAmOdara, mAdhava!                              |
